Irish organisations are moving beyond AI experimentation towards strategic implementation as evidence mounts that artificial intelligence agents are delivering measurable productivity improvements across workforce management and business operations.

According to the Irish Examiner, PwC research reveals that 53% of Irish participants report clear productivity boosts from AI agents, though only 38% are experiencing cost reductions. The findings suggest that scattered AI efforts rarely lead to transformation without disciplined execution.

Robert Byrne, technology, data and AI partner with PwC Ireland, said HR functions are among the areas ripe for AI agent deployment. He added that finance, IT, tax and internal audit represent focused opportunities where substantial returns can be achieved.

The research shows 70% of Irish companies plan to increase AI budgets by the end of 2026. However, current adoption remains low, with only 9% reporting widespread AI agent use compared to 52% in the United States. Some 83% of Irish organisations remain in the exploration phase.

Workforce transformation is accelerating as AI capabilities expand. PwC's Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey found that 43% of Irish workers have engaged with AI over the past year, with 67% reporting increased productivity. Notably, 55% believe they will maintain control over how technology influences their work.

Recruitment priorities are shifting towards AI generalists capable of overseeing automated systems. Byrne explained that as AI agents increasingly handle specialised tasks, demand is growing for professionals who understand both technical architecture and AI management.

Data quality emerged as the primary obstacle to AI adoption, cited by 40% of respondents, whilst 36% struggle to integrate AI agents with existing systems. These challenges underscore why senior leadership must identify strategic investment areas where returns justify transformation costs.
