Industry NewsMcDonald's UK launches 2,500-placement work experience scheme to address youth unemployment
McDonald's UK has announced a major new work experience programme offering 2,500 paid, in-person placements in areas with high concentrations of young people who are not in education, employment, or training (Neet), positioning the fast food giant as a large-scale actor in addressing the UK's youth employment challenge. The initiative carries direct relevance for HR professionals and workforce development practitioners working on early talent pipelines and social mobility strategies.
Personnel Today reported that the five-day placements will be facilitated by restaurant franchisees, with a target of 25% of places to be offered to young people who are Neet or at risk of becoming Neet. Participants must be aged 16 or over and will gain hands-on experience of restaurant operations, including real-world tasks such as inventory management, alongside development in interview techniques and time management skills.
The announcement follows UK unemployment figures showing youth joblessness at 14.3%, with 19,000 more young people out of work in the three months to April compared to the preceding quarter.
McDonald's also launched its inaugural Youth Confidence Index alongside the scheme, revealing that two-thirds of young people are keen to undertake work experience but feel there are insufficient opportunities. Some 69% said there were not enough placements available locally, and 61% cited cost as a primary barrier.
Lauren Schultz, new UK chief executive at McDonald's, said: "Everything a young person needs to learn about the world of work, from communication to financial skills, can be mastered at McDonald's."
Schultz added that the company is creating a genuine pathway into employment and demonstrating the transformative power the hospitality sector can have on the national workforce.
