Industry NewsDungarvan chamber launches neurodivergence support pack for Irish SME employers
Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber is set to launch a practical neurodivergence support resource aimed at helping micro and small to medium enterprises create more inclusive workplaces, in what the Chamber believes is one of the first regionally led initiatives of its kind in Ireland focused specifically on SME needs.
WLR FM reported that the Understanding Neurodivergence in the Workplace, Employer Support Pack was launched by Minister of State for Mental Health Mary Butler TD, and was developed in partnership with Waterford Local Enterprise Office, Buíon Phort Láirge, and David Walsh Office Supplies.
The pack provides employers with practical workplace adjustment guidance, manager and communication supports, templates and checklists, legal and HR snapshots, and information designed specifically for smaller employers and busy workplaces. It also covers guidance around workplace structure, clarity, and support strategies for neurodivergent employees, including those with ADHD and autism.
Jenny Beresford, CEO of Dungarvan & West Waterford Chamber, said the initiative responds to a recognised gap among employers, particularly at SME level. She said: "Businesses want to do better in this area, but many employers, particularly SMEs, are unsure where to start. There is a genuine appetite to create workplaces that are more supportive, inclusive and structured, but businesses need practical tools and clear guidance rather than complicated policies or jargon."
Beresford positioned the pack as both a business support and a workforce participation tool. She said: "This is about helping businesses retain talent, support staff wellbeing and create working environments where people can contribute and thrive. Neurodivergent employees bring enormous strengths, creativity and value to workplaces, but employers often lack practical supports or confidence in navigating this area."
She added: "We believe initiatives like this should become part of mainstream business support nationally."
The launch event brought together employers, business stakeholders, and representatives from across the South East, reflecting the Chamber's broader focus on future workforce development and inclusive employment.
For HR practitioners, the initiative highlights a persistent challenge in the Irish SME landscape: the absence of structured, accessible neurodiversity frameworks comparable to those available to larger organisations. Micro and small businesses frequently operate without dedicated HR functions, leaving managers without the tools or confidence to make reasonable accommodations or structure communication effectively for neurodivergent team members.
