A new report from the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) reveals that AI roles in Ireland have doubled since 2023, positioning the country among the world leaders in both the demand for and supply of artificial intelligence talent. The findings highlight significant potential for productivity growth as AI increasingly augments existing jobs, though the impact on overall employment levels remains uncertain.

The report stresses the urgent need for reskilling and upskilling, with workers and employers needing to adapt to rapidly evolving technologies. Education providers face particular challenges, requiring instructors with up-to-date expertise to deliver AI-focused courses, while ensuring that foundational cognitive skills are nurtured alongside emerging technical capabilities.

The EGFSN also cautions that close monitoring of AI developments will be critical, alongside robust support structures such as digital skills programmes and infrastructure to maximise AI’s economic benefits. The report frames AI as both an opportunity and a challenge, emphasising that strategic workforce planning is essential to avoid talent gaps and productivity bottlenecks.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment Peter Burke welcomed the findings, noting Ireland’s high levels of STEM graduates per capita and the government’s commitment to investing in the jobs of tomorrow. Minister of State for AI Niamh Smyth highlighted that the strong alignment between AI talent demand and supply is a particularly positive development, though she stressed the need to mitigate risks AI may pose to the workforce.

With AI set to transform sectors across the economy, Ireland’s position as a hub for talent and innovation offers clear advantages—but only if reskilling, education, and policy keep pace with technological change.
